This past year, our Emergency Food Relief Hub has made significant strides in supporting those in need, thanks to the dedication of our staff, volunteers and partners.

Our team of five regular volunteers has been at the heart of our success, contributing 1,001 hours (equivalent to one and a half months of non-stop work) to keep the Hub running smoothly. Their commitment has been crucial in providing essential aid to individuals and families in our community.

We have also supported local schools, making 151 deliveries to ensure students start their day with nutritious meals. These deliveries are vital in helping children succeed in the classroom.

In terms of overall food distribution, the Hub has distributed more than 61,000kg of food—equivalent to 132,190 meals. Valued at more than $458,000, this food has made a significant difference in alleviating food insecurity within our community.

To better support our recipients, we have introduced fortnightly cooking classes led by our passionate volunteer, Paul Clarke. These sessions help participants make the most of each item in their food hampers, aiming to reduce waste and enhance nutrition. For instance, while pasta is a common item in emergency food relief due to its long shelf life and availability, it might be unfamiliar to people from different cultural backgrounds. Our cooking classes not only introduce new arrivals to common Australian ingredients but also celebrate a variety of cultures and cooking techniques.

Another achievement to come this year is the launch of our Nourish Sunraysia Welcome Shop, offering diverse traditional foods grown locally through the Food Next Door (FND) farms. This initiative supports newly arrived migrant and refugee farmers at FND and ensures that the wider community has access to fresh, locally sourced produce that meets dietary needs.  This shop, open Wednesdays to Fridays from 10am to 4pm, can be found on our Mildura site on Twelfth St.

We have also hosted school group tours at the Hub, where students learn about food insecurity and the importance of community support. These educational efforts are vital in raising awareness and fostering a sense of community responsibility.

As we reflect on the past year, we are proud of the difference we have made and grateful to everyone who has contributed to our mission. Together, we are nourishing our community, one meal at a time.
