In early 2024, a young Vietnamese woman enrolled in SMECC’s ACFE Beginner English and Computer Skills classes in Swan Hill. In just a few months, she has demonstrated how crucial and transformative learning English and acquiring new skills can be for new arrival migrants and their personal growth.

The woman, who preferred to remain anonymous, enrolled in the classes after her husband heard about them through word of mouth. Before joining, her world was largely confined to the walls of her home, with limited connections with others.

Since starting weekly classes with SMECC, she has experienced a remarkable shift. Her teacher, Abida Elahi, says the classes have not only provided her with essential English, computer, and life skills but have also offered a nurturing space where she can build friendships and feel a part of her new community.

Her story is a shining example of how SMECC’s classes can make a real difference. They help new arrivals and low-level English speakers gain confidence to interact with others and create meaningful connections in their new surroundings.
